Beginning to Seriously Prepare

I’ve started to seriously prepare for a Southbound thru-hike attempt later this summer. I’d been pretty casual about it up to this point because I was unsure if the timing was going to be right for me but all signs are pointing to yes.

I’m going to be using a hammock, since I’ve never been a great ground sleeper. Furthermore, I’m making my own hammock as a means of cutting down on the cost. I wanted my total pack weight, including food and water, under 30 pounds, 25 really, so lightweight materials are a must. Lightweight gear is pretty expensive so I’m leveraging my wife’s sewing skills to assemble my hammock, under-quilt, and tarp. I started to sew the hammock a couple weekends ago but I’m going to have to pick up the pace because April will be here before I know it. That’s when I plan to have my first three day test run.

I’ve also started to make a list of all the loose ends that need to be tied up before I leave. Disappearing for 5 months isn’t as easy and you’d think it is. Thankfully, I’m married and my wife is staying behind so I don’t have to worry about closing up a house. There are still a ton of things to account for, especially since I’m quitting my job right before I begin my hike.

We’re expecting a big blizzard this weekend. I intend to use that time to work on my tarp and bug net, and order the remaining items I need to complete my hammock. Exciting times!
